Duties: Largest industrial Union in North America seeks energetic individuals from varying backgrounds who are interested in careers in the labor movement and fighting on behalf of working people.
The USW Collective Bargaining, Research and Benefits Department provides support for collective bargaining in the areas of economics' health care, pension and other benefits; and public policy initiatives.
Department staff respond to requests for assistance from elected leadership and staff, and often participate in negotiations in the USW's core and non-traditional industries (steel, paper, oil and chemical, aluminum, tire, mining, health care, public sector and other manufacturing and service sectors).
Travel Required: The position involves working with Department staff to assist elected leaders and staff in evaluating, bargaining and monitoring various health care, sickness & accident, life insurance, pension, 401(k) savings plans, and voluntary employee beneficiary associations(VEBAs). Opportunities to provide support for a wide range for public policy campaigns, including health care and pension/retirement legislation, and to help educate staff and local union leadership will also be part of the position.
The individual in this position will also be expected to develop analytical skills and bargaining skills involving economic and contractual prociaiona and issues.
Qualifications: Degree or coursework in labor relations, business, finance, economics, law, or related field and a commitment to the labor movement. Graduate or advanced degree preferred, but will consider candidates with benefits or labor union experience. CEBS coursework desirable.
Stong computer, analytical and communication skills are essential. Candidates should be self-motivated, able to work with others and on multiple projects simultaneously.
Familiarity with various health care costs containment strategies, ERISA, VEBAs and/or multiemployer benefit plans helpful.
Salary: Salary range is $57,000 to $87,000 per year, plus $3,900 per year per diem. Starting salary is determined by experience and education. Excellent benefits, including a defined benefit plan.
