Plan now to attend the LERA 68th Annual Meeting, May 26-29, 2016 in Minneapolis, MN. The meeting will be held at the Millennium Hotel Minneapolis. Join us in Minneapolis for exciting workshops, symposiums, section and industry council sessions and meetings, committee meetings, plenaries, breakfasts, luncheons, and receptions, and special pre-conference day professional development workshops and tours.

Registration is Open!

Registration opens online on February 18, 2016. All participants and attendees must register, including speakers and discussants (chairs, panelists, presenters, speakers, discussants, etc.). Those who pre-register by the earlybird registration deadline of March 25, 2016 will receive a discount. Online registration will be open through May 22, 2016. After that, onsite registration will be offered at the LERA headquarters hotel, the Millennium Hotel Minneapolis, beginning May 25, 2016. Registration will open at 7am on the opening day of the conference and at 8am on the second, third, and fourth day of the conference. Many (most!) of the meals and special events are included in the price of your registration, including breakfasts, luncheons, and the Welcome Reception.

Millennium Hotel Minneapolis Discounted Rates: Single or Double: $129 | Triple: $149 | Quad: $169

Rates do not include applicable state and local taxes. Room rates will be available for three days prior and three days after the event dates, subject to availability guest rooms at the time of the reservation. An early departure fee of $75 will apply if an attendee checks out prior to the confirmed checkout date (once a guest has checked in to the hotel, if the guest decides to change their departure date, at that  point, a $75 fee is assessed.) You can, however, cancel or change your reservation up to 24 hours prior to check-in, without fees.

Discounted hotel rooms will be available starting January 1, 2016 and through 5:00 p.m. local time at Hotel on Monday, May 2, 2016. After the cut-off date, it is at the hotel's discretion whether to accept additional reservations, which would be subject to prevailing rates and availability.

LERA 18th PhD Student Consortium

The LERA 18th Annual PhD Student Consortium will be held in conjunction with LERA's 68th Annual Meeting, and is chaired by Nikolaus Krachler of Cornell University. The event will be held on Saturday, May 28, 2016, 8:15 - 11:30 am with other events continuing throughout the day.  To register for this event, you must first register for the meeting, and indicate on the registration form that you intend to attend the PhD Student Consortium. LERA Junior Faculty Consortium

The LERA Jr. Faculty Consortium will meet Saturday, May 28, 2016 in the afternoon, and is chaired by Alan Benson of the University of Minnesota. Pre-Conference Professional Development Workshops Available

On the pre-conference day, Wed., May 25, 2016, LERA will offer two professional development workshops. An additional fee will cover admission, meeting costs, additional amenities, and will be added to your registration fee if you choose to attend. Workshops will begin at 8 am and conclude at Noon.

  • Workshop 1: Tools for Addressing Contemporary Workplace Tensions and Conflicts
    Facilitated by Carolyn Chalmers, Joel Cutcher-Gershenfeld, Erin Kelly, Thomas Kochan, Nancy Peace, and via skype, Mary Rowe
    Is your organization experiencing increased racial and gender tensions in the workplace? Have you heard or had reports of disparaging comments taking place in the workplace? This workshop will help you identify NEW ways to address workplace tensions before they escalate into potentially destructive conflicts. As just two examples, we can discuss adding an organizational ombuds office into a conflict management system, and strategies for teaching micro-affirmations as one way of preventing micro-inequities." We will focus on examples from organizations in the Twin Cities areas. Hands-on exercises illustrate how to utilize state-of-the art tools for conflict management in your workplace.
    Who should attend? Managers, union leaders, mediators and facilitators of organizational change and others who share an interest in and responsibility for addressing the tensions, inequities, and conflicts occurring in workplaces today.
  • Workshop 2: Unions and Internal Organizing
    Facilitated by Monica Bielski Boris, University of Minnesota and Michelle Kaminski, Michigan State University
    This workshop will address union strategies for internal organizing and membership mobilization. There has been a renewed focus on these strategies because of the spread of right-to-work laws and the possibility of open shop conditions for all public sector unions because of the Friedrichs case. Many unions have developed plans for outreach to both members and non-members to foster union commitment. These plans involve workplace mapping, relational organizing, and issue campaigns. We will explore various models with hands on exercises and interactive discussions.
    Who should attend? Leader unions and staff from unions should attend as well as academics and researchers interested in union member engagement.

LERA is offering educational and enjoyable tours, put together by the planning and logistics committee (James Bialke, John Budd, and Lane Harstad), in the afternoon on the pre-conference day, Wed., May 25, 2016. An additional fee is needed covering transportation, admission fees, and any additional amenities. A $30/40 charge is added on your registration fee, and is optional. Tours will depart from the hotel lobby at 3 pm and return approximately 5:30 to 6 pm.

  • Tour 1: Women's Work: A Walking Tour - Facilitated by Barb Kucera
    Meet us for a walking tour highlighting factories whose working conditions exposed by Eva Valesh in a series of published articles in 1888 and 1889. The tour will examine jobs available to women in th late 19th and early 20th century, and some key events in women's labor history in Minneapolis.
  • Tour 2: Project Labor Agreement at the Vikings Stadium - Facilitated by James Bialke
    The beautiful new construction of the Vikings Stadium is highlighted by a Project Labor Agreement.
  • Tour 3: Labor Relations at The Toro Company - Facilitated by John Budd
    A plant tour and labor relations discussion at the Toro Company's Shakopee plant that produces precise metal components for its lawnmowers and other products.

Industry Studies Association Conference - Meeting in Conjunction with LERA

We are pleased to announce that the Industry Studies Association will be meeting in conjunction with the LERA 68th Annual Meeting, in the same hotel, on May 25 and 26, with one day of overlapping programming. The LERA/ISA "joint" day will take place Thursday, May 26, 2016, will feature several jointly sponsored sessions and special events throughout the day. Those attending from May 26-29, 2016 should register for LERA's conference.
